It is the most comforting desi meal that was ever made! Call it Varan-Bhaat ani toop in a Maharashtrian home, Dhal-Bhaat in a Bengali home or even Sambhar-Rice with ghee; Dal-Rice with ghee is eaten as a complete meal across India and for good reason.

Dal and Rice together are a complete vegetarian protein; the ghee tadka not only enhances the flavor but also helps us absorb the nutrients from the dal-rice, turmeric and cumin. Adding desi cow’s ghee increases the benefits of our everyday meal. While a variety of dals and rice can be used to make our favorite meal, the most common preference is arhar or toor dal with fragrant basmati rice and cow’s ghee. This combination is made in heaven, and executed to perfection by our mothers. In their kitchen, the secret ingredient is warmth and lots of love.

Now, let’s talk about everything that goes into making Dal-Chawal-Ghee that makes it so great. Every ingredient that is added in making dal chawal compliments other the ingredients enhances flavours and also makes the dish more nourishing for the body in that combination.

#1 Building Muscle – Complete protein for vegetarians

Dal-Rice is considered to be the perfect protein for a vegetarian. The proteins and amino acids in dal are complimentary to those in rice. Dal and rice are both incomplete proteins but eating them together makes the combination a complete protein for vegetarians. Grains, such as rice or wheat can act as complementary proteins for legumes such as lentils. They contain the cysteine and methionine that lentils don’t have, and lentils provide the lysine that grains do not have enough of.

My mother often tells me to take a pinch of hing or asafetida with warm water when I have a stomachache or indigestion. Cumin is known to trigger our digestive juices and enzymes, it is also high in fiber and has anti fungal and anti microbial properties. Ghee also stimulates digestive juices. Yet, I’m a firm believer in feeling strong and fit, rather than weak and thin. I’d rather be toned and work hard on my shape than just blindly cut fats and carbs from my diet.

So, I spent days to research proven facts to find these simple tips and tricks to boost your health gain and weight loss. We know that most fats are high in calories and we tend to minimize or cut them out all together when we are trying to lose flab. Yet, I learnt that some fats actually help you burn and metabolise the fat in your body. You will actually lose the excess fat if you eat them in moderation on a regular basis.

  1. Cow’s Ghee

Pure Cow’s Ghee, is known to be rich in vitamins like A, D, E, K. It also has a beneficial fatty acid, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and butyric acid. Ghee is a types of Fats Oils that Help Lose Body Fat. A regular supplementation of CLA showed significant loss in body fat over six months according to an obesity and weight gain study. Butyric acid on the other hand improves digestion and heals the stomach, helping in better digestion. Both these qualities of ghee not only help reduce fat but also help in stomach and digestion related problems like bloating and betters your metabolism.

How to Use it? 1 tablespoon of ghee can be added to temper a dal, spread over rotis or even mixed in dry chutneys such as miligai podi.

2. Coconut Oil, cold pressed

Coconut oil, cold pressed is the hottest fat in discussion in health and nutrition circles. Coconut oil, although a saturated fat, contains medium chain fatty acids, which burn and convert to energy instantly without accumulating as body fat around your waist. In fact, studies have shown that coconut oil helps you burn belly fat and creates energy. It also reduces appetite and helps overall weight loss and promotes fitness. Coconut oil is another one of fats oils that help lose body fat.

How to Use it? Coconut oil is a great carrier oil and it helps you absorb minerals such as calcium and iron. So, I like using it with spinach, green leafy vegetables or simply cooking an egg in it. In the cold pressed oil, the flavor is rich and fragrant and adds delicate coconut richness to the taste. I often cook spinach uttapams in it, or use it with curry leaves to temper sambhar.


3. Onion Seed Oil (Kalonji ka tel)

It is said that this oil can cure all, except death. It is a powerful food to boost health and fitness. This oil has anti-obesity properties and decreases many weight gain triggers. It is known to have helped millions of people shed excess weight. It reduces appetite, regulates blood glucose levels and glucose absorption, these properties make it an important tool to help health gain and weight loss. This makes it among fats oils that help lose body fat.

How to Use it? While many people take a teaspoon of the oil on its own every morning, I don’t find the idea appealing. Onion seed oil can be drizzled raw on a salad and it will add to the flavor and the goodness of the all the raw food.


4. Sesame Oil

According to a Yale study, participants who consumed 2.6 tablespoons of sesame oil daily lost a significant amount of weight at the end of 45 days. When taken in moderation this oil can help weight loss and also makes you feel full. Yet, since it is high in calories, excess consumption may hinder your weight loss. In this case, moderation is key. Another study about treating obesity – Ayurvedic perspective, BHU says claims have been made of 10000 people having lost up to 10 kgs with regular use of sesame oil. Sesame oil is fats, oils that help you lose body fat.

How to Use it? While cooking in sesame oil is a common practice in Maharashtra, my personal favourite is the Asian sesame oil. It has a rich, nutty flavor that adds a perfect flavours to sauces and soups when drizzled on top.

5. Avocado Oil

Avocado Oil with the high concentration of oleic acid in avocado oil can help you lose weight – especially when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. However, there’s more to it than that. Avocado oil is thick and full of powerful nutrients, meaning that it will make you feel fuller faster and keep your appetite satisfied longer.

How to Use it? Drizzle it on salads, tacos. Add it to your salads in place of Olive oil with some lemon.
